How to make a Felt Bumblebee with free printable!! {ABC Felt Animals} - Wildflower Ramblings

I am creating a felt animal for my son for every letter of the alphabet in a new series: ABC Felt Animals {check out all my posts here}!  We have had so much fun making these animals together — and they are helping him learn the phonetic sounds of the letters, so it has been very worth the time and effort put in to make these felt animals!

{This post contains affiliate links, please see my disclosure policy.}

All you need to make a Felt Bumblebee is:

  • felt: black, yellow, white (or you can use paper!)
  • cotton balls
  • hot glue gun (or Elmer’s if you’re just using colored paper)
  • amazing Fiskar scissors (if you’re going to work with felt at all, you have to check these scissors out!)

** This craft uses a hot glue gun — please keep out of the reach of children — these are for adult use only!!

This is the only way this makes sense to me.  I cut the picture (free printable at the end of this post!) into pieces. Then, I assemble all of my felt pieces.  I cut two each of the head, thorax, and abdomen.  Then cut the six legs and wings (and a stinger, which I forgot — but thankfully John reminded me — and had to add it at the end!)

Then I cut some fuzzy yellow stripes for the bee’s thorax and abdomen.  Those were glued on first.

The trick is to glue the legs and wings onto one of the body (the bottom of the bee) and then glue the top striped body on top, so the wings and legs are inside.

As you are gluing the thorax and abdomen together, add the cotton ball in the inside.  Then glue them together, and lastly, the head.

A beautiful bumblebee.

John was very excited.  (I always mess up the glue, so little white specks are on the back of the bumblebee. Oh well.)

John brought the bumblebee over to daddy and they noticed together that the bumblebee was lacking a stinger.  They looked up bumblebees on the Nexus.  I quickly fixed the bumblebee!

Book Extension

Bumble Bee by Margaret Wise Brown is the sweetest little poem about a sweet bumblebee that you will ever read.  Margaret Wise Brown does amazing things with words and this little book shines.  My son and daughter both love the rumbly, tumbly, bumbly bee :)
