How to make a Felt Oystercatcher

July 20, 2017

Here is our O is for Oystercatcher ABC Felt Animal!  I know what you may be thinking!  “Oy” is not the traditional “o” short vowel sound that is taught first to young children.  But my son insisted he wanted an oystercatcher!  I thought it was a unique and sweet choice, so I obliged.  You can find many more templates and how-to posts in our series: ABC Felt Animals.  My children love their felt animals and this project has really helped to reinforce beginning sounds, so we are are moving slowly but surely!

Though they take some time and effort, the felt animals have been well worth it.  They develop phonemic awareness and help children learn and create and imagine.  I hope you enjoy learning about how to make a felt mouse!

All you need to make a Felt Narwhal is:

  • felt: dark gray, white, black, and orange (or you can use paper!)
  • cotton balls
  • hot glue gun (or Elmer’s if you’re just using colored paper)
  • amazing Fiskar scissors (if you’re going to work with felt at all, you have to check these scissors out!)

** This craft uses a hot glue gun — please keep out of the reach of children — these are for adult use only!!**

First, cut out your paper template.  I cut out two dark gray bodies, one black tail feather, two white under bellies, two sets of gray wings (with two feathers each), two black heads, two each of the orange legs, and two orange beaks and two eyes!

Next I began gluing the white underbelly on both of the bodies.

Next, I glued the wings on each body, and the feet in between the bodies.

Glue the orange beaks between the black heads.

Finally, with the cotton balls glued on the inside of the oystercatcher, and the black heads glued on top.

You need just a couple of cotton balls in between the heads too.

My daughter loves him!

My son loves his oystercatcher so much!  This one was a little bit more detailed, but it turned out very wonderful!

The kids both wanted an oyster with a pearl so we added that too!

I don’t have a template and coloring page but the link below will work just fine to make your own felt oystercatcher!

You can find the oystercatcher picture here.
