What is Reggio inspired learning?

What is Reggio inspired learning?  When I started this journey to understand the style of education that originated in the small city of Reggio Emilia, Italy after World War II, I could not grasp what it meant.  But now I have become inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to learning and what it looks like for early childhood learners.  I…

I is for Inchworm {Gross Motor from A to Z}

Children need to move!  For health, for learning, for well being.  And in the colder months, it is harder and harder to give our children the opportunity to move their bodies!  We are excited to be a part of the Gross Motor Series from A to Z from Still Playing School!  This series provides 26 ideas for…

how to have fun at home with kids

Fun My son is usually shy about wanting to do “messy” sensory activities.  I may set something out for him to explore, and he may walk away or only be engaged for a few moments.  Having a book to hold has made a huge difference for him.  He can now hold 150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids and…

phonics learning with bob books

How can we teach our children to read? There are different schools of thought for how we should teach our children to productively, and confidently, learn to read. I recommend teaching a rigorous phonics program to children. That is, children learn the sound that each letter, or phoneme makes. For example, the word: mat has…

learning sounds with montessori alphabet objects

Every child learns to read in their own unique way.  They all learn at a different pace and timing.  Our job, as parents and educators, is to create an environment where they are immersed in literacy and to create experiences for using their literacy learning.  Children can begin learning sounds with Montessori alphabet objects. {this post contains…

Art is not something I’m familiar with. Growing up, I thrived in theater and music, but never art. Unfortunately, I always felt like “I wasn’t good” or “that’s not my thing.” I’m sad about this! Since homeschooling my children, I’ve come to realize that I’m indeed a wonderful artist!! I can draw plants and bumblebees and even an octopus! I just need a bit of time, good materials, and a good teacher.
