Make a felt alligator {with free printable} - Wildflower Ramblings #crafts #preschool

I am creating a felt animal for my son for every letter of the alphabet in a new series: ABC Felt Animals!  We have had so much fun making these animals together — and they are helping him learn the phonetic sounds of the letters, so it has been very worth the time and effort put in to make these felt animals!

{This post contains affiliate links, please see my disclosure policy.}

All you need to make a Felt Alligator is:

  • felt: dark green, dark brown, black, tan (or you can use paper!)
  • cotton balls
  • hot glue gun (or Elmer’s if you’re just using colored paper)
  • amazing Fiskar scissors (if you’re going to work with felt at all, you have to check these scissors out!)

** This craft uses a hot glue gun — please keep out of the reach of children — these are for adult use only!!

This is the only way this makes sense to me.  I cut the picture (free printable at the end of this post!) into pieces. Then, I assemble all of my felt pieces.  I cut two each of the body, cut the four little feet, then the tan mouth (cut in half), and the eyes!

This alligator has been one of my most easiest felt animals!  All you need to do is glue the feet and one of the mouths onto the brown body.  And the other mouth onto the green body.  Then add cotton balls to the brown body and glue the green body on top!

The eyes are two half circles, with a black circle in the middle of one side each, glued together at the top, and then glued onto the top of the green body.

Finally!  He’s done and ready for his photo shoot.  John loved his little eyes and asked why they were set out like this.  I showed him some pictures of real alligators and we talked about their eye placement a bit.

He loved the alligator’s mouth at first.  But then he wanted his mouth to close and didn’t like how it stayed open….

A wonderful way to learn the phonetic sound “a”!!  A super cute little alligator.

I made a template and a coloring page for you to make your own alligator!
