Our “Around the World” homeschool unit reminded me of the incredible value in teaching our children about the continents, cultures, and ecosystems that make up our awesome diverse world. Understanding the layout of the earth and the unique traditions and lifestyles of different cultures helped our kids grow in empathy, curiosity, and respect for others. By weaving in stories of missionaries, we introduced them to real-life heroes who made significant cultural exchanges and highlighted the importance of compassion and service.

Each child received a passport and money from various countries. Learning about different currencies added a practical layer, giving our children a glimpse into the economic systems of various countries and the concept of global markets. Geography tied everything together, providing a sense of place and helping our kids locate countries, cities, and natural landmarks. When we explored ecosystems, we discussed how the environment shapes the way people live, work, and interact with nature, encouraging our little ones to think about environmental stewardship and sustainability.

This holistic approach to learning not only broadened their academic knowledge but also nurtured a well-rounded, global perspective—one that I hope will inspire a lifelong love for exploring and understanding the world around them.

We used many different resources for this exciting full year Around the World unit study of all of the continents around the world. We used Beautiful Feet Around the World in Picture Books Vols. 1 & 2, On Mission from Gentle + Classical Press, plus many atlases from Usborne and Classical Conversations, as well as My Father’s World Exploring Countries, among other materials sprinkled in!

Around the World Year

For our morning time, we used Case for Christ Devotional, then the children go started with their morning work which consists of math and language arts.

Family lessons are during lunch time; they start with Bible and some fine arts, and then and consist of history, science, nature, and geography, which I have detailed below!

Catechism from the Westminster Shorter Catechism and a Bible Story.

Then once a week we do one of the following:

Family Read Alouds

Our read aloud have been a combination of Audible (or Libby or Hoopla if I could find it through my Library Apps) and read-aloud before bed. These included:

We had hoped to read through Seabird by Holling C. Holling but didn’t get a chance to! Another idea was Around the World in 80 Days. This would have been wonderful but we simply couldn’t fit it all in!

We did several science units from The Good and the Beautiful. I add living books to these! I need to create a post for this! This last year we did Water, Weather, & Marine Biology.

In the evenings, we read picture books, or our current literature read aloud, along with a Bible Story and our Little Pillows devotional (this is simply fantastic!).

This is how we approached each Continent:

NORTH AMERICA

For North America, we followed our Indigenous Peoples Plan, this was our last year’s curriculum which we were just finishing up! I want to share this soon as well!

EUROPE

We looked at the continent on the world map and in our atlas books, then went through the following countries:

Missionary Read Aloud Books for Europe are by Janet and Geoff Benges. They wrote the Christian Heroes series which shares about different missionaries as they brought the Gospel to many around the world! Here’s our book for Europe:

ASIA

I wanted to make sure to add in the Middle East, starting with geography in our atlas books and coloring, then reading a short chapter from Little Folks of Many Lands.

Missionary Read Aloud Books for Asia:

AFRICA

Introducing with a chapter from Little Folks of Many Lands, The Good and the Beautiful History 3 Lessons 19-21, 24

Missionary Read Aloud Books for Africa

ANTARCTICA

This was very brief, but we watched several Antarctic Treaty Video and explored wildlife with the chapter from Beautiful Feet Around the World with Picture Books

OCEANIA

SOUTH AMERICA

More Around the World Historical Fiction Novels for Middle Grade

In addition, my son also read his own historical fiction novels, mostly corresponding to the area we were in; this was not matched up perfectly.

  • The Clockmaker’s Son by Jenny Phillips (Austria)
  • Marjorie by Sidney Baldwin (Maine, United States)
  • Chico of the Andes by Christine Von Hagen (Chile)
  • Captured Words by Frances Williams Browin (Cherokee)

(The above four were a part of the Level 5 Language Arts from The Good and the Beautiful.)

As we concluded our “Around the World” homeschool unit, we didn’t get to do *everything* I had planned. But we journeyed through the diverse landscapes of continents, explored rich cultural traditions, learned about the lives of missionaries who made a global impact for the Cross, and discovered the fascinating ecosystems that sustain our planet.

This unit, and all the books!, has broadened our understanding of the world, deepened our appreciation for its people, and inspired a sense of connection to the global community. Through our studies, we’ve not only gained knowledge but also cultivated a curiosity and respect for the world that will continue to guide our learning adventures.
