Reading opens a world of imagination and creativity for our children. If I read to each of my children each day, both together and individually, than the day is a success!

One of the main reasons why we do a letter of the week style preschool at home is to encourage me to continue to read new books, do new activities, introduce new vocabulary. For our letter of the week, I will usually find a small stack of books and read them at breakfast time and try to emphasize the “Gg” at the beginning of words. We cycle through the small stack throughout the week during meal or other quiet times in the day. This is a fun way to read new books and reinforce some beginning sound phonics work.

Reading benefits a child’s mind, a child’s speech, a child’s life. You can read more about why reading is one of the most important things you can do with your baby or child at 10 reasons to read to your child.

I am making a preschool list for all of our favorite books from A to Z. {You can see a detailed explanation for our preschool plans here : next round of the alphabet, for our preschool.}

Our list for the Best Preschool Books for the Letter G

Goodnight Gorilla is the classic bedtime story. All the zoo animals just want to go home with their friend, the zookeeper. I still remember when my son’s eyes lit up, “She’s so surprised!” when he realizes that the woman is waking up to a bedroom full of lions and hyenas and gorillas.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Feodor Rojankovsky is my favorite illustrated version of this classic fairy tale.  The story of a young mischevious girl who steals porridge and breaks chairs. This is my favorite edition. But James Marshall and Jan Brett also wrote interesting, and different, versions too.

Berenstain Bears and the Week at Grandma’s by Stan and Jan Berenstain is one of my son’s favorites. For him, Grandma’s house is one of his favorite places! Brother and Sister Bear have much more fun at Grandma’s house than they ever expected.

Go, Dog, Go! by P.D. Eastman celebrates dogs of all colors, shapes and sizes. This easy reader book is a fun one for children to read on their own or in groups!

Lousy Rottin’ Stinkin’ Grapes by Margie Palatini is a twist on the old fable of the fox who couldn’t reach the grapes in the grape vine. The appealing pictures and bouncing prose make this a great read aloud book for children.

G is for Goat by Patricia Polacco tells the story of some mischievous goats who carry the reader through the whole alphabet!

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is the story of friendship and getting older. The sad tree who just wants to give his boy all he can will have you crying in the end. And important lesson for children to hear about giving and receiving.

And some soft g books….

A Giraffe and a Half by Shel Silverstein is the story of a little boy and his pet girafee who stretches and stretches. The repetion is helpful for children’s developing minds and the hilarious rhymes are loved by all.

Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae tells the tale of overcoming the odds.  Gerald the Giraffe is too awkward to dance, or is he?….  A sweet story about accepting and loving who you are!

Curious George by H.A. Rey is the classic story of our childhood, or rather, our parents’ childhoods.  This is the first book in the beloved series.  But warning — there is a man smoking a pipe in almost every scene {just kidding, only on a couple pages}. My, how ways have changed. Nonetheless, the little mischevious monkey, George is well beloved by all.  Here is the complete, and wonderful, Curious George Treasury.
