sensory play with gelatin

Our sensory play this week was inspired by the Fourth of July. (Well, it’s blue, and that is about all that is related, so it’s a stretch.) And I hid some dinosaurs in it. (For no other reason besides I had them.)

I found this idea from Fun at Home with Kids. And it is such a no brainer! Gelatin + water = gooey fun! Don’t try this inside — at least I didn’t!

I was real unscientific about it. Just boil 6 cups of water. Add 4 tbs of gelatin to it and pour it into a tub.  Add a couple drops of food coloring. Drop your fun sensory items of choice in and refrigerate!

{We have a big tub of beef gelatin in our cupboards — we add it to food because of its immense nutritional value, but you could also buy unflavored — or flavored to make it taste yummy, but a lot of store brands add aspartame, so be careful!}

Our jiggly “jello!”

John couldn’t believe I let them play with it.  It was/ has been super hot, so they are both rockin’ their cloth dipes and are shirtless.

Discovering the gooey fun.  John immediately began digging for the dinoaurs while May just felt it and tasted it.  It doesn’t taste very good, but she still liked it, and I was happy to let her eat it because gelatin is so good for her (and us).

This was a stretch on our “N week” theme, but John got a new insect cage so I called it a dinosaur “NNNest”.  He loved the idea, set up some grass and sticks inside and put the dinosaurs to bed in their nest : )

May was very excited.

Have you tried sensory time with jello?  What things do you hide to make things exciting?

  2. Love these pics! I haven’t done a sensory bin with jello but I think my 3 year old AND 9 month old would enjoy it! I like using the blue to be like water, very cute. We did explore a famous artist using jello and make some alphabet fruit snacks with gelatin, so we have been enjoying it in other ways. Thanks for the inspiration! Hopping over from Teach Me Tuesday.

    1. Do you have a post about your “famous artist”? That sounds really fun! Making art with jello, I will have to try :)
