make your own frankincense skin cream

February 19, 2015

We get really dry in the winter time around here.  Really, really dry.  Since starting essential oils, I set out to make the perfect face cream — and this is it.  It is smooth, soaks in nicely, does not leave a greasy feel.  It is perfect.  Even my husband says so.  In fact, my daughter let the glass of this liquid gold fall on the floor and my husband couldn’t believe that I’d waited two days to make more.  He is addicted to it and so am I.  I use this skin cream on my son’s eczema and my face every day and I think I look brighter — well at least his eczema is virtually non-existent, as long as we stick with it.  Victory.

This skin cream works amazing, and it also smells heavenly too.  I mean heavenly.  Jesus was anointed with this stuff upon his birth, it’s got to smell good, right!?  Well, surprisingly enough, when I first smelled Frankincense I did not love it.  I don’t know why, but I was less than impressed with the smell.  This is because essential oils are so powerful that, seriously, your body must adapt to them.  Now I just sniff this stuff because it is a happy oil and it is oh so good for my mood and my well-being.

What is so great about Frankincense?

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) has a sweet, warm, balsamic aroma that is stimulating and elevating to the mind. Useful for visualizing, improving one’s spiritual connection, and centering, it has comforting properties that help focus the mind and overcome stress and despair. Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. More recently, it has been used in European and American hospitals and is the subject of substantial research. Frankincense is also a valuable ingredient in skin care products for aging and dry skin. The ancient Egyptians used it in rejuvenation face masks {Young Living}.

So, how to make this amazing skin cream?  Super, super easy.

Recipe for Frankincense Skin Cream

    1. First, ensure all utensils and equipment is completely clean and free of any debris, since this is a face lotion, we want to make sure that it is free of anything other than the yummy {and edible!} ingredients.
    2. Melt 1/2 cup of coconut oil on the stove top.  Ensure that it doesn’t burn and it is on very low heat.
    3. Meanwhile, put 1/2 cup (1:1 ratio, so use more or less as desired) of avocado oil in your small 4oz ball jar.
    4. Put in 14 drops Frankincense and 2 drops Lavender essential oil from Young Living. We added Lavender to brighten this up, and it smells amazing!!
    5. Let the jar cool on a cold countertop or in the refrigerator.  There is no need to stir — the two oils have already combined!!
    6. Slather on your skin as desired, and enjoy!
