15 Bible songs to teach little ones! {with free printable}

My son loves music.

John has two things he loves most in this world: playing with tractors and playing guitar.  We have bought him several “kid” guitars, but he also received a “real” one from his Grandma and Grandpa — which he adores.  Or, if he has to, he’ll use an “air” guitar — he has brought this one out for various music festivals over the summer!  :)  We also have a small bin of various musical instruments which is always available.  From drums to clappers to recorders to xylophones to music scarves.  He loves it all — and his baby sister loves it too!

I believe that he is musically gifted at his young age.  I know that I’m his mom, so I am biased, but he is!  ;)  I studied voice performance in college, and I lead worship at our church, and my husband plays guitar very well, so it is in his blood, as well.  :)

Lately, I have become more intentional with music for him.

Naming instruments

He plays his guitar in rhythm with the music we listen to, and he can pick out the type of instrument that is playing too.  “That’s a trumpet!”  or “That’s an oboe!”  I try to name the instrument while we are listening to music, but he often asks if he doesn’t know.

Different genres of music available

We play Bible music in the mornings.  We play classical, opera, or lullabies close to naptime.  And we play lively, fun music when daddy gets home (sometimes that means Metallica or Dave Matthews Band, which John loves too).

Music theory and lessons

I have begun an actual music lesson time with John, as well.  We don’t have a scheduled time in our day for this, but my goal is exposure 2-3 times a week.  I will write more about this in a post coming up!

Learning songs

In addition to having instruments available and listening music, I want him to actually learn some songs.  Sure, he knows choruses here and there, but I want him to know the words and sing the melodies properly.

I want him to learn the Biblical truths of many wonderful songs, and I also want him continue to be exposed to different genres and elements of music.  We have decided to have a song of the week and a hymn of the week.  (If you’ve read my blog for a while, you’ll realize that “of the week” is a term I use loosely, and for now, for my little 3-year-old, we work at his pace — which means our Tot School letter of the week and our Music time is done about every two weeks.)

So, on most mornings, we sing our song and our hymn, and then we keep singing and dancing and moving because he and May love it so much.

Teaching Bible songs 

I love that we are learning some of the great Bible songs from my childhood.  There are many wonderful kids’ collections out there, but I have found my favorite, Play A Little!  These songs are wonderfully well-done.  A lot of Bible collections for kids can seem monotonous and all of the songs run together, but in this cd, every song sounds different!  We love the variety of instruments used, as well as the lively singing.  The cd has 15 tracks, and they are all favorites from when I was little!  I love that the tracks repeat themselves, and the second time around, you can sing without the vocals — this would be great for teaching a Sunday School class!

I decided to make printables to go with each song.  The song we are working on goes up on our wall, next to our letter of the week materials  — My hymns post will be coming soon.  The rest of the songs go in a little binder with page protectors.  They are very simple, but I love that they go with such an amazing collection of songs!  This album is well worth buying, if you’ve been looking for a fun one!  (It also comes in a set of four cds, Play a Little, Laugh a Little, Smile a Little, and Dream a Little — all of the songs are lovely.)
